In 1984, Paul Dean, M.D. and his wife walked into a high-end department store and were pitched to purchase a $150 bottle of skin cream by a sales associate. As a board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Dean was turned off by the misinformation consumers were receiving in tandem with outrageous skincare promises. Dr. Dean looked at the ingredients and was astounded by the marked-up price. This incident sparked a strong desire to create accessible skin care and to start debunking false promises in the skincare industry. With the intellectual power of a team of medical doctors and a bustling medical practice, his first company, dermEssence, Inc. was formed and was the first premium skincare line featured in a national drug store. The company became Resource in 1988, and then SkinResourceMD in 2007. Dr. Dean has been instrumental in creating two other brands, VetDermSolutions and VitalFit-SR. VetDerm Solutions is the first dog shampoo created by a veterinarian and a dermatologist.

Dr. Dean earned his medical degree in 1968 from the University of California in San Francisco. After a one-year residency in Internal Medicine, Dr. Dean joined the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), where he trained in epidemiology. His role at the CDC enabled him to participate in numerous public health projects and epidemic research studies. These experiences prompted him to complete the educational program at UCLA School of Public Health, where he received his Master's Degree in public health.
After achieving board-certification from the American Board of Dermatology in 1976, Dr. Dean began his clinical dermatology practice in San Diego at Grossmont Dermatology Medical Clinic and Skin Cancer Treatment Center where he has served patients ever since.
Dr. Dean has dedicated most of his life and career to give back to communities and organizations throughout the world in need of physician expertise. He is currently a board member of International Medical Corps (IMC) and donates a percentage of profits from Skin Resource.MD to help support their education and health programs for women and children in Africa.
Dr. Dean was a recipient of the 2020 Healthcare Hero of the Year by the Grossmont Healthcare District in San Diego. The award was given to a few recipients who demonstrated selfless dedication to creating a healthy East County community in San Diego. As part of the Champions for Health‘s program Project Access San Diego (PASD), Dr. Dean sees patients for consultations, skin cancer screenings, and in-office procedures like biopsies and lesion removals, pro bono. He also helps at another free clinic and has brought on a partner to assist.
Dr. Dean is an outdoor enthusiast, so understands the plight of the sun worshipping-athlete and families who love the outdoors. His favorite skincare product is the Total Facial Cleansing Gel –he loves showing how you can wash your face and open your eyelids in the middle of the face wash and not burn your eyes.
