9 Plant-Based Ingredients You Need on Your Face

9 Plant-Based Ingredients You Need on Your Face

Plants are more than pretty decorations. Many contain natural healing properties like aloe vera or antimicrobial benefits like tea tree oil. Skincare products with plant-based ingredients use nature’s power to nourish, replenish, and strengthen your skin. They provide gentle solutions to common skin issues, including acne, aging, and uneven pigmentation. We’ll give you a rundown on some of the most common plant-based skincare ingredients and what they can do for you.

Tea Tree Leaves

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a skincare powerhouse. It contains natural moisturizing properties, finding a place in products that treat dry, itchy skin. Tea tree oil also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, which means it can soothe red, angry skin.

This native Australian plant contains antiseptic abilities to calm the skin while helping to fight the bacteria that cause acne and breakouts. We use tea tree oil to help control oily skin and clear acne in our Tea Tree Deep Clearing Facial Cleanser, BHA Treatment Gel (for acne), and Shine-Free Solution.

Baobab Seed

Baobab Seed Oil

The Baobab tree, native to the African continent, contains nutrients like beta-carotene, fatty acids, campesterol, and cholesterol (the good, skin-nourishing kind). It contributes to even skin tone and provides nutrients that promote collagen production.

Collagen can reduce visible wrinkles and help protect the skin against environmental stressors.  Baobab seed oil is the starring ingredient in our Baobab Skin Correction Facial Cream, which targets fine lines and wrinkles and corrects uneven skin pigmentation.

Green Tea Oil and Leaves

Green Tea Oil

Green tea doesn’t just make a relaxing drink. This well-known tea leaf and seed do as much good on the outside of your body as it does on the inside. It contains antioxidants, in particular polyphenol, that help your skin resist damage from a harsh environment. Polyphenol also treats clogged pores and reduces acne.

The extract also helps the skin retain its natural moisture. Green tea’s caffeine content also comes in handy for your skin by reducing puffiness and swelling, making it a key ingredient in our Eye Perfection Therapy and Total Skin Moisturizer.

White Tea Leaves

White Tea Extract

White tea extract reduces oxidative stress on your skin. What does oxidative stress do? It causes wrinkles, changes in pigmentation, and other visible signs of aging. This plant-based ingredient is found in our Alpha Hydroxy Skin Renewal Serum. It’s not the only plant-based ingredient in this anti-aging product. It works alongside lemon extract, sea whip extract, and pyrus malus fruit extract to restore, cleanse, and soothe the aging skin.

Willow Bark

Willow Bark Extract

Willow bark extract fights acne with salicylic acid. Salicylic acid also acts as an exfoliant to help remove dead skin cells. We’ve paired it with tea tree oil and other acne fighters in our Tea Tree Deep Clearing Facial Cleanser.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil contains many of the same properties as tea tree oil, namely it acts as an antioxidant, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory ingredient. Consequently, it’s often found in products designed to cleanse the skin and treat acne.

For example, it’s found in our Zinc & Sulphur Mask to treat oily skin and acne. We use eucalyptus oil in several of our acne treatment products, from our astringent to our Shine-Free Solution to help control oil production.

Peppermint

Peppermint

Peppermint makes a delicious addition to candy, but it can provide a different kind of deliciousness for your skin. Peppermint contains antibacterial and antioxidant properties that combine with anti-inflammatory abilities. Consequently, peppermint reduces irritation, itching, redness, and acne. It’s another ingredient in our facial wash and acne treatment products.

Sage

Sage

Here’s another ingredient that increases the protective power of antioxidants and that fights acne with antimicrobial properties. It doesn’t hurt that it can also reduce redness and inflammation. It’s a prime ingredient for cleansers and acne treatments, which is how we use it at SkinResourceMD.

Sunflower Seed Oil

Sunflower Seed Oil

Sunflower seed oil has many of the same properties as other ingredients on our list, like antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, and moisture retention. It’s a key ingredient in our Crystal Clarity Exfoliation Scrub, Total Skin Moisturizer, and Ultra Rich Biolipid Cream.

Sunflower seed oil also contains valuable healing properties. It contains oleic acid, which aids wound repair and skin healing. We include it in two products Recova Post-Surgery Cream and Recova Tinted Arnica Cream to provide extra care when your skin is in recovery mode.
